Large Field Socialization allows dogs to become comfortable off-leash and with other dogs and humans. Dogs are inhibited by leashes not only physically, but also mentally, and it greatly affects their behavior - sometimes making them more aggressive, fearful, defensive, or depressed. A great proponent (inventor?) of the practice was the late Dick Russell and one can learn about him and his training in the outstanding documentary "Dog Man" - currently available via Amazon Prime. Here's - here's a trailer:
This petition requests the Town of Corte Madera and/or the Niel Cummins School to investigate and consider options for allowing Large Field Socialization for dogs with certain parameters and restrictions to be determined. With the significant increase of dog ownership as a result of the pandemic, the need is more urgent than ever. We think that it's important for there to be positive advocacy for the well-being of dogs, that represents the majority of dogs and owners that are well-behaved and responsible towards the community, rather than just the voicing of complaints about problem dogs and dog owners that too often end up diminishing the quality of life for all dogs and dog owners.
